What is a Freight Bill?

What Does a Freight Bill mean?

The bill of exchange is an official document issued during the transportation of goods in the transportation sector and containing all information about the transported cargo. This document, which has legal validity within the scope of the Turkish Commercial Code, puts the contract between the carrier and the sender in writing. The bill of shipment includes details such as the quantity, type, packaging status, sender and recipient information of the goods to be transported. Thanks to this information, both the carrier and the owner have the opportunity to protect their rights in case of possible disputes throughout the transportation process. The bill of shipment also serves as a delivery receipt documenting that the cargo has been received by the carrier and will be delivered to the specified address.

Transportation operations are documented not only in road transport, but also in railway, maritime and air transportation through the bill of shipment. Although each type of transportation contains similar information in terms of content, the way it is organized and its legal basis may differ. For example, while the term bill of lading is used in maritime transportation, bill of lading is more common in road transportation. In this respect, the bill of shipment is one of the basic logistics documents that ensures both the safety of transportation and the clear determination of the obligations of the parties.

What is the Use of the Shipment Bill?

The most basic function of the shipping bill is to ensure that the goods are shipped safely and correctly during the transportation process. This document proves that the carrier has received the cargo, agreed to carry it under the specified conditions and will deliver it to the buyer at the destination. Therefore, it is both a contract and a document of liability for the carrier. For the sender, it shows that the transported goods have been shipped correctly. The bill of shipment is the most important evidence in case of disputes that may arise in transportation. For example, if the goods are damaged, missing or lost during transportation, the parties may claim compensation based on the information contained in the bill of shipment.

It also plays a critical role in bill of exchange, customs procedures, insurance coverage and international transportation processes. Especially in international trade, the accuracy of transport documents directly affects the passage of goods through customs. Therefore, the consignment note is not only a shipping document, but also a recording tool that ensures commercial security and transparency of the transportation chain. Thanks to this document, both the sender and the receiver can follow the transportation process, be sure of the safety of the cargo, and maintain their relationship with the carrier on a legal basis.

What is the information that must be included in the bill of shipment?

In order for a bill of exchange to be considered valid, it must contain certain information. This information ensures that the transportation process is transparent and traceable. First of all, the sender (cargo owner) and carrier information must be clearly stated. The trade name, address and contact information of both parties must be written completely. In addition, the type, quantity, weight, packaging type of the transported goods and, if any, special transportation conditions (for example, refrigerated transportation, dangerous goods warning, etc.) should be included in detail.

The document also contains information such as the route of transportation, loading and unloading addresses, transportation fee and delivery date. In addition, the carrier's statement regarding the conditions under which the goods were delivered should also be included. In some cases, insurance information, additional certificates or customs reference numbers depending on the type of transport are also included in the consignment note. All these details reduce the risks that may arise during the transportation process and clarify the obligations of the parties.

Who Prepares the Shipment Bill and Whom It Is Delivered to?

The bill of exchange is usually prepared by the carrier company, but the accuracy of the information in its content is ensured by the sender. In other words, the document is a document issued by the carrier but based on the declaration of the sender. The bill of exchange is usually prepared in three copies: one remains with the carrier, one is given to the shipper, and the other is delivered to the buyer. This distribution ensures transparency of the process and information integrity between the parties. Especially in international transportation, it is important for these documents to be notarized or electronically signed in terms of legal validity.

Is the Bill of Shipping a Mandatory Document?

The bill of exchange is a legally required document for many types of transportation. According to the Turkish Commercial Code, the transportation contract made between the carrier and the sender must be recorded in a written document. This document is mandatory both to prove the contract and to secure the transportation. Transportation carried out without a bill of exchange may be considered invalid, especially in terms of commercial and insurance. In other words, if one of the parties cannot present a bill of shipment in case of damage or loss during transportation, it becomes difficult to claim rights. For this reason, issuing a consignment bill for both national and international transportation is the basic assurance of transportation activities.
